baseballcaps = obligation?

Hoi,
i've watched some Baseball match yesterday (Germany vs. France) and i just wondered that every player wears a baseball cap, 'though the weather wasnt like you would need to wear one.
so i just wondered whether baseballcaps are somekind of obligation compareable to the football socks or is it just cool to wear one? :D
