Imho a good looking Desktops makes me wanna work at my PC, when my Desktop looks like Windows 1.0 i get annoyed after like 20 minutes, it's definetly more fun with a goodlooking Desktop. ;)
I prioritize function over aesthetics as well, but since my desktop can't have more functions it doesn't make a difference anyway. ;) Same here, but knowing that you have a sexy Desktop makes even writing some huge code more fun. :)

Your desktop could be more functional. E.g. you can't see CPU/RAM/bandwidth/temperature while inside an application with that desktop, which I completely depend on... :P
Yes.. Slackware is good for learning how the OS actually works, but for everyday use it sucks donkeyballs. But give it a try, you'll learn from it. Back in the days I installed LFS-system, and used it for a while. It was a pain in the ass, but I sure learned a lot from it, knowledge I find really valuable now :)

using a tiling wm is anything but simple, and to use something like awesome to its potential you'll need knowledge of lua and the api ;_;

It has it's fair share of teen drama shit but then so does western television with stuff like The O.C., One Tree Hill, Joan Of Arcadia, etc... and for the record I've seen a lot more western TV than asian TV!
