Hilighted comments + disabling

All comments made within the last 15 minutes are now highlighted so it's easier to follow very long pages and see with a quick glance if there are any new comments made.

If you want to turn this feature off, go to 'Edit Profile' and unclick 'Highlight Comments'

you'll then get the old style display.

are u kinda hyperactive? :o
fusen aim for more important thingys pls :XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
k brb, banning you
Parent
or unban joof

everyone is innocent untill its 100% clear imo and in joof's case its far from 100% clear tbh
Parent
I didn't ban him, take it up with whoever did
Parent
decem did, but he wont admit that he did it without any real proves
Parent
I got banned aswell without any real proof :P
Parent
except ure own confession?
Parent
I got banned before that :P
Parent
i hope gl for ur irl life :>
Parent
Great, except it doesn't seem to work!

I use Opera.
what "doesn't work"?

apart from opera ofcourse :P
Parent
Oh, actually it does work, but the colours are so ridiculously similar that I couldn't notice the difference before :DD
Parent
BUT OMG THE COLOURS ARE FAR TOO DIFFERENT THAT IT RUINS MY LIFE AND GIVES ME "EYE CANCER"

yeah the colour is supposed to be similar so that it doesn't totally stand out. If on your screen the colour is basically identical then you need to calibrate the colours :P
Parent
but i like my gamma / brightness / colours at 100% ='(
Parent
try using the default style, wouldnt seem to work with Dark / Pink either here.
Parent
I use the default scheme.
Parent
i am using the latest opera aswell and for me it is only working when I'm using the default scheme.

then i dont know, sry.
Parent
I've only just added it to the alternative themes
Parent
yeh its working now, thanks :]
Parent
why not highlighted comments since the last visit on a thread?
cos then you have to store a shit ton of entries in db that I don't think is worth it
Parent
it makes sense

anyway it would be easier to see real new stuff on a page with 500+ comments
Parent
sure it'd be easier and a complete solution, but when you think of how many new comments are made every day, the best solution that also takes into account load times etc is a time based solution like the one used :P
Parent
yep

it's better than nothing and useful, good job!
Parent
Technically speaking "highlighted comments since the last visit" is also time based. ;)
Parent
not in the same meaning tho :P
Parent
"Highlight posts older than T" is exactly the same, only difference is from where you get T.
Parent
'highlights posts older than one year whether you have read them or not' is slightly different than 'highlights posts you have not read'

as one is due solely to time and the other is irregardless of time and due to you reading it or not
Parent
[I meant newer than T of course.]

Seems we're not on the same page. :)

There's no way of knowing which individual comments someone has actually read, what is needed is a timestamp saying when the user last viewed the thread. Then the logic can be identical, and the only difference is how you calculate/retrieve T.

T = current_time - 15 minutes
or
T = last_time_the_user_viewed_this_thread

if(time_of_comment > T) then highlight_comment

(And note that I'm not saying it's worth it in terms of effort vs usability vs performance, I have no way of knowing that but would guess that it's not. :)
Parent
you could hook up js to see when the current comment is at a certain part of the page say the middle and also time the length it's stayed there, or just trigger ajax call everytime you scroll past a comment which would mean you at least scanned the page content :P

but in the end this is all just being pedantic as the main idle of a "unmark when read" comes from forums and you typically read the forum post when clicking on the page :P

so the difference in definition would still stand
Parent
nice :]
i like your flag
Parent
i like yours aswell, very najsz !
Parent
good idea!
i find that a bit usuless :>
is it possible that its not working with the dark theme?
Yeah, its not working indeed.
But please dont change that, i dont like those highlighted things.. at least one style without :p
Parent
YOU CAN TURN IT OFF NWO SHERLOCK
Parent
doesn't work for me :<
smth to do because I use firefox extension "stylish" and special crossfire css?
if you are using stylish, add

Quote
div.constrainImagesNew {
background:#EFE8E1 !important;
}
Parent
thanks holy drago, works fine!
Parent
Nice, now people hiding their ET:QW hate in long lists of comments will have no escape!
lol, you really are on a mission
the problem is that they compared the game to ET, if they had made a fresh start i think nobody would whine cuz its the only game with big maps and cars that has fun smg action.
Parent
disabled it.
would be nice if you could configure the time like: highlight 5 mins old comments/ 10 mins / 15 mins
5 = uber refresher? :P

Very good idea anyway, though if you do it thread specific the entire advantage of the time based thingy is wasted :P
Parent
not yet working in the other xfire styles, isn't it?
soon xfire will be able to give me a blow job
I can do that as well.
Parent
well done adding that check box
doesn't seem to work for me either, using firefox and default style
I cant even log in using firefox :E
Parent
i thought its a firefox error XD
i like it but i don't like the #EFE8E1 bg color used, change to #E2E4EC pls?

Anyway nice work again Fusen :>
any better then?
Parent
Much better :>
Parent
where are the new flags?:<
WHY CAN'T IT JUST SAY *NEW* IN RED NEXT TO THE DATE AND TIME

caruzo on 03/08/08, 16:36:04 *NEW*

It would be useful and it wouldn't fuck your eyes up.
agreed with this skaterboy.
Parent
because the whole idea is when you scan the comments, your eyes get drawn to the new text.

wouldn't be the case if you try and highlight the timestamp as it's above the actual text and seperated by a hr
Parent
@ Xfire 2 theme it's kinda hard/dark to tell (not sure if you get me), is there anyway I or you can make it brighter?
Parent
I found it quite bright for the xf2 theme lol

I'll test in a second with a brighter setting
Parent
Im thinking typical highlighter yellow would be nice, but then if you found the current too bright you would probably be blinded by yellow!
Parent
nah it's just trying to make it so it doesn't completely stick out, it's supposed to be a subtle hint not a HUGE FLASHING ALERT

if you get what I mean :P

what monitor are you using to view? as it may be you have the brightness set up pretty high so it currently fades in a little too much with the other colours
Parent
I disagree, 100%. Seeing bright red *NEW*'s are not easy to notice, they also won't fuck your eyes out. The idea behind it is nice, but at least for me, the red backgrounds just give too much of a headache.

edit: I tried it on again, NOW THE FRIGGIN' BACKGROUND IS BLUE. Goddamn, it's even worse than the previous pink one.
Parent
people seemed to reply better to this blue look than the old beige one.

I think the problem is your monitor settings tbh, the colours seem to be a lot harsher for you then everyone else.

find a suitable hex colourcode for you that doesn't seem to make your eyes bleed
Parent
They are not harsh, they are just friggin' annoying. My eyes focus on the different color in the background instead of the actual text which makes reading hard and gives me headaches. AFAIK I am not the only one.
Parent
sounds like a personal issue :/ which you can easily disable it for
Parent
It has been disabled from day 1, but it would be kinda nice feature if it wasn't so anti-me.
Parent
I'll continue looking for a nicer way of displaying it tho.
Parent
looks nice
crossfire is getting makeovers all the time lately :O
If you want to turn this feature off, go to 'Edit Profile' and unclick 'Highlight Comments'

Fusen for president!
hello. give me 5 points plz. i cant stand to have none and there is nothing to do with a regular humand brain that gives you some.
sorry but i dont see any difference
Disabled it, because old comments are like pages in a book - If you read them, you'll remember which one was last.

Besides CF looks better without highlight.
I want a guestbook in my profile :(
plz fix the search option
profile textbox is white with xf2 theme
Parent
nice, I'll certainly use it
highlight colour looks shit ;(
