After reading Splodge's dooms day prophecy yesterday I decided to write an article on whats actually happening in the ETQW community and shed some light on what the near future holds. Takens take will be a regular article series, in witch I will try to write somewhere between every week and ever second week depending on.. well if I find the time. Dont take everything written here too seriously, this is written to entertain.
(no I dont understand retarded ET people smilies >_<)
(00:40:06) (@H2k|taken) and there is enough competitions
how is it too late? ETQW is just getting started, people act like it have been out for 6months, it just came out for gods sake :)
But you got a small chance with ETQW if someone makes a good mod but getting over a first impression and mistakes made by Splashdamage it will be difficult, expessially with a game like COD4 just released after ETQW.
Quake4 is a good example of what happens with a bad first impression, no patch or tweak ever saved that game.
But for a guy like you that likes ETQW, I hope a mod can save the game(Who knows, i might even play it then) and keep it intresting for MGC's because if not it will go down the same road as ET and with ETQW the result would even be worse considering the first impression.
A game that's been made by the community, all though most ET players mostly still play on the etmain like mods, like etpub, jaymod etc.
ETQW is a game that was finished in their eyes and does have support from the company with the promise it was for public and competition, and still they deliver a crap game.
The game has so many flaws and a crap first impression that i wonder if a mod can save the game.
They worked for 4 years on a game while in the same period a community worked on their old project and made a better game then the developers at the same moment with ETQW.
The only thing splashdamage should have done was to look into the ET stuff like ETPRo and ETpub, with that they would have had 80% of the ideas on paper and they only had to create a fluent engine like the Q3 engine to support the ideas and they would have had one of the best games, but they decide to leave the community alone and implement there own ideas with a engine biased towards graphics instead of gameplay.
It's just funny that a community can deliver a better game in the end than a company can.
ps:
There will probably be a reply with ET was the same in beginning, Well lets have a look @ that:
1. ET had better first impression(it was closer to RTCW)
2. RTCW and ET were closer together.
3. ET was free so lower expectation than ETQW where you need to pay money for.
4. ET was unfinished project.
5. Good engine.
Well i'll stop the whining now, all though it's better then most short "ETQW sucks replies"
I won't kill it a 100%, a mod might save the game a little but first impression of a serious game with crappy engine is something difficult to get over.
:)
cant agree more i feel almost all the new games are putting too much emphasis on graphics and thus making their engines sluggish.
A game needs steady public players to keep beeing played, there is no denying that, a public scene close to the pro scene, CS and CSS are good examples, Q4 is a bad one.
Further more any Quake player would trade Q4 for Q3, just because they failed in the beginning.
a game doesnt have to be a massive success to avoid failing
bringing cs and css into this is sooo wrong... easy games that any noob can play, quake 4 and even etqw to some extent are going to have the average gamer running scared after 5 minutes due to the far more difficult game style so naturally they will have far less players
I was *so* close to buy one of these tshirts they sold when the iraq war was still ongoing with a picture of him and some quote :D
"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
"Our initial assessment is that they will all die!"
"Surrender or be burned in their tanks!"
Over de US troops: "They are most welcome. We will butcher them!"
You dissapoint me :/ It's not anyones business who plays for them, maybe he is their spiritual leader and sings songs on ventrilo to make his team play better, who cares.
You fail taken :C
And in my eyes he is a part of the problem, not saying he is the problem. This is my take on it, nothing more or less :) But yeah when reading it again its a bit more personal than I meant it to be.
Also your comment about how we should have taken hentai because he is our best aimer is quite strange when 5v5 Valley with no restrictions is so vehicle and spam-based. I guess you also didn't know that the lineup was fixed to that of the one we used in Lille, like for every team. So research your facts before you write your next article?
anyways. i think there are many things that did go wrong with etqw.. to make that a list it would be smth like.
- bad choice to release beta1 that early (netcode sucked balls and hitreg just wasn't even there)
- bad choice of map in beta2, valley. c'mon. it was just horrible.. and scared many inf-based players away.
- bad choice of map in the demo, valley (see last pointer)
- they shouldn't have had 2 long open betas that blowed so hard. they should've just stuck with closed beta and released the demo with perhaps better suited map.
- the extremely long open beta made those teams almost too good, as most (there are always exceptions) new retail teams blow (compared to the old beta-heroes) and they have a long way catching up. and it just isn't much fun for a dude that bought the game the very same day it was released to get owned2k7 just because he just faced a beta-player.
- the maps are "out of the boxed" balanced for 18v18 or smth (looking on the vehicles) with their spawntime and amount.
- et:qw-public sucks due to that balance and the fact there is no limits.
- et:qw-public and et:qw-competition is so different (so the public-player never knows what he misses out on as he drops the game since it just wasn't any fun).
- the lack of limitations (so u can actually sort stuff in a server cfg)
- some parts of the netcode and high demanding maps.
..and some more stuff.
there are ofc many good things aswell. many i just love the pace, i love clanwars etc.. and i would love if et:qw could grow as big as i onced hoped. but a game that really blows on public. i dunno if that kinda game will last in a long term :(
SDK (and a competition-mod), 1.3, ETQW:TV has to come really fucking soon or else it will lose even more ground to cod4 that actually seems like a great game both public and competition wise, as long as POISON (aka "CURE") doesn't ruin everything as the last thing the cod-community needs is another cod1/2.
oh well. one can only hope et:qw starts growing again. but as Lightning said, "first impression is the key in a new game". and for most of the competition-players, the first impression of our game was horrible, and i doubt the et:qw-scene will see the many potential buyers that allready lost interest in et:qw, get back in the scene even though the actual clanwars in et:qw are great.
Only thing I cant say I agree with is the beta teams being too good. H2k have been playing for around 5 weeks now and vs most teams that have been playing 3-4 months we have no problems taking maps. Think any clan with a good roster and enough motivation can make it to the top with ez atm. And I there is about 10-15 teams that I think will be on the same level as most of the good teams atm in a month or two.
anyways, as i said there is always exceptions, teams who play much, have proper dedication and players of potential can always get "up there". and your team consists of you (who's been playing et:qw since when, january?), winghaven (et-hero and beta-player), 3 more of et's finest (maus, dav1d & clown) and timmi,(who just seemed to have a natural talent for et:qw and adapted quick as i can't say i've heard of him before retail). so i can't say your team is just random players who's got together and have quickly made it to a high lvl :)
apart from your own team. could u mention another team with pretty much only retail-players that are on a high lvl (or even just decent) atm? :<
:D
Hardly deep trouble, just underachieving. They still came 2nd and 3rd in both LANs so its hardly cause for too much concern.
Looking forward to the next
Or did you write it to insult us?
Or do you want flame coming from us?
It's really really childish to write down something like that about my team, or about a person from our team. You don't even have the facts straight.
I don't get the point, but if this is what you want, so be it.
They shouldn't let immature people write down stuff on sites like this, it downgrades the quality of the website.
let's see.. i bet there haven't ever been some journalist in a dutch newspaper (or similar) that have moaned on let's say rijkaard, advocaat or van basten for picking the wrong team or for not being good enough as a coach for the national team? :)
/slap
By the way, baldrick isn't part of the grof playing lineup, he's a manager, and very rarely plays.
Having read the article, it's a good read, looking forward to the next one.
keep it coming ^^
n1 article :)
If everyone should think like that, I dont understand why we're all not playing Counter-Strike.
So if thats why you changed to Cod4 I think its pretty sad.
"Only dead fish follow the river."
EDIT: I guess this doesnt make any sense anymore since Snap removed his comment.
EDIT: nice ninjaedit
I agree on some of your points (those which for one don't involve your own opinion), however..
"No ETQW-TV that was said to be coming." - How do you know it is not coming? Activision have talked about CoD4TV as well but it isn't there yet either.
"You want all these restrictions and this and that which is gonna take ages to come if they make a config for it but i doubt they will." - Same counts for CoD4 and its cvars...
'Oh yeh another thing is this i asked Anti why bother make valley/canyon answer: "SD want to make money and its a good public map". How the fuck are they good public?' - I doubt an SplashDamage employee would have said something like that so please remove your quote tags. I myself have had some great moments attacking on Valley / Canyon, it seems like you quit the game too early to find out how the community would adapt to these maps.
Oh yeah, CoD4 has five different game types and five different team sizes, if that isn't split up I think your example of ET:QW is totally blown out of the water.
Anyway, why does every ET:QW or CoD4 topic here turn into a CoD4 vs ET:QW battle?
loking forward to ze next episode =)
what did he say?
Is ETQW dead? Good as. Will cod4 die if we sit on our asses? Not even then.
But now you went on to another game, not because its better, but because more players play it. And you're badmouthing et:qw the best you can. Its like you're holding everyone responsible for the time you spent on et:qw cause you feel you've wasted it.
We forgive you for wanting to play some other game instead of this. Can you forgive us for wanting to play et:qw also, please?
So not true :( i wish etqw all the best, have ofcourse in general no hard feelings to people who keep playing it. However, from the moment we made the switch alot of players didn't forgive us at all and started talking crap.
I'm not badmouthing et:qw the best i can (i could do way better but i don't want to), i say what i think is true and overall crossfire tends to post only the good news about the scene, acting like it's more active then it actually is to try to get more people to buy the game.
Taken still arrogant as in the bf2 scene ?
Hope for you , you dont say sh*t like this in real life. I woudent like to be you :).
ETQW is dead like Q4 but just get nice sponsoring.
Oh and taken please coorrect my grammar.
i <3 wen you do that instead of going on the real facts that you are a arrogant assh*le.
Kind regards ;)
