CODQCUP: July edition

image: codqcup_291x105

CallofDuty.se and Qpad are proud to present the 6th installment of the Call of Duty Qpad Cup, the CODQCUP July edition. Last season well known teams such as United Kingdom Team Dignitas, Finland Insignia Cadre, Finland Team Logitech.fi and Netherlands Serious Gaming competed, however the June edition was surprisingly won by Slovenia Evolve Gaming (now Infused Gaming).

In the upcoming days the prizepool and the participating teams in the CODQCUP will be announced, at the moment strong teams such as France The Last Resort, Finland Team Logitech.fi Belgium defuseKids and United Kingdom Reason Gaming have already announced to participate in this months CODQCUP. This seasons CODQCUP might possibly serve as a prequel to the TeK-9 Outpost on Fire LAN #2 at the end of this month, with the strongest teams of Europe most likely competing in both.

It has been said that the CODQCUP July edition might be the last online tournament organised by CallofDuty.se for now, concentrating on the Dataparty and Wonderbase events later this year. Also with Call of Duty 4 coming out arround the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008 the need for a large open online competition such as the CODQCUP might not be needed anymore (Wonderbase with their slogan "The last large LAN before CoD4. Death comes to Borås, Sweden in August" reveals the expected).

Grand Final Complete

Europe TeK-9 6-13 United States of America Pandemic
Europe TeK-9 13-10 United States of America Pandemic

Winner : Europe TeK-9

Day 2 came with no major surprises for European fans, Dignitas looked fantastic whilst picking up their victory and TeK-9 were equally dominant. However TeK-9's next opponents, Speedlink dropped 7 rounds on their way to victory over Pure, who credit to them were a tougher opponent than the other two europeans had. As mentioned that sets up the first all European tie between Speedlink and TeK-9 on Carentan. Digntias take on .50 who defeated highseeded canadians, flow gaming. Flow had a very bad day infact coming close to elimination in the loser bracket, needing overtime to save them.

Gotfrag's Ireland crow actually had this to say:
This has been a great weekend for Call of Duty 2 and, in my opinion, the North American and European CoD2 communities are the real winners, as cheesy as that sounds! Full credit to Tek-9 though, the difficulty of going to a foreign continent and having to perform cannot be overstated. The whole team - and Steven too of course - really deserve this. They have taken some slack lately but I think the pressure is definitely now on Logitech and Serious to show they are still on the same level.

Finnish versus Dutch pride

image: cod2ecxvaj5

For the past few months Finland Team Logitech.fi has kept a strong presence in the Call of Duty 2 scene, most of the time only the Dutch players of Netherlands Serious Gaming have been able to stop the Finnish force from gaining the first place in any competition. Tonight the Finnish powerhouses will face a Dutch team in the ClanBase EuroCup XV Winners bracket, however we're not talking about Serious but the second strong team The Netherlands has to offer.. Netherlands H2k.Qpad, which has been performing very well recently by tossing the favorites for a top 3 position Europe TeK-9 into the losers bracket.

The match will also be broadcasted by TGBF (video + audio stream).

Locki Confirms Second Beta

In an irc question and answer session, SplashDamage Lead Game Designer Paul "Locki" Wedgwood dropped a bomb shell tonight. He just confirmed that a second beta client will be available that will not only include certain bug fixes which can't be solved with a simple patch to the current beta, but will also include a new map!

QuoteAfter the Programmers have completed their testing of new things like the anti-lag code in updates (along with Bots), we'll be releasing a brand new build called Beta 2. This 'Beta 2' will feature a new map.

At the moment we think that Valley will be the best choice, as it features additional vehicles (such as the Anansi Hovercopter, and the MCP objective). To give you a sense of how much performance has improved, I've been playing Valley today against bots on a 7-series NVIDIA in 1600 x 900 with all graphics settings maxed out. It looked amazing and I got really good frame-rates.

We don't have a timeline to announce yet for beta 2

Valley will replace the current map Sewers.

ET:QW Public Beta Updated

Great news for all you Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta testers, as the client update is rolling out as you read this. The update adds bots and fixes several issues. To grab the update, simply start up your beta client and the in-game updater will do the rest.

::
The most significant addition is that the bots are now activated. Server administrators will be able to populate their servers with computer-controlled bots to fill up empty player slots. id Software’s John “Maleficus” Dean has been working on these for quite some time and we’re very excited to be able to roll them out now for our beta testers to see them in action. There’s actually a great interview with John on IGN talking in-depth about the bots, so check that out if you want to learn more about them.

::
One of the most talked about items on the beta forums is that aiming is quite difficult at times due to the way player and latency prediction are handled in this particular revision of the beta. You’re seeing this because our antilag features haven’t been added to the public beta yet, but our latency wonder twins Tristan “FeaRog” Williams and Gordon “digibob” Biggans have been working tirelessly on them in recent weeks and several improvements are forthcoming there. The first is going into this update and you should find it a bit easier to hit targets now. We continue to toil away on antilag and we’ll have a bit more information on what’s going on here in a future blog update.

::
We’ve got two pretty significant server browser fixes in this update, courtesy of our resident user interface commando Jared “jRAD” Hefty. The first fixes the pesky “Server is full.” bug that sometimes occurs when multiple server instances are run on the same box. Essentially, the information sent back from the server would sometimes get confused about which instance was being queried and send the wrong information back to the browser.

The second fix concerns our all-seeing ETQW master server, which happily dropped full servers off the list sent back to the in-game browser. These servers would reappear once they were no longer full, but only if the New List button was being pressed. With this fix, they won’t disappear in the first place, so you will always have the full server roster available for client-side filtering.

::
We’ve plugged a number of memory leaks in the server code, much to the delight of our GSP partners. You should see improved server performance now and we will continue to optimize the ETQW server code in order to make this thing as stable and efficient as possible.

Quakecon Games Announced

image: Quakecon_logoWith little over a month till the tournament, Quakecon have announced that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Quake will be the games for this summers event.

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars; and the first ever “Quad Damage” tournament spanning all four QUAKE games. The tournaments will take place during the 12th annual QuakeCon which is being held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from August 2-5. More than 6,000 gamers from around the world are expected to attend the four-day event. The total QuakeCon Championship Tournament purse will be $100,000, courtesy of title sponsor NVIDIA

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars makes its tournament debut at QuakeCon 2007. 32 teams will compete in the incredible battles between Earth’s Global Defense Force (GDF) and the invading alien Strogg. Each 6-person team will battle it out in a double-elimination bracket-style tournament, with each team having the opportunity to both attack and defend. With a focus on objective and class-based gameplay, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars will test each team’s ability to combine skill, strategy, and teamwork in tournament play like never before.

QUAKE Quad-Damage Tournament

This year brings a new twist to QuakeCon's classic 1 vs. 1 competition with the inaugural Quad Damage Tournament. Spanning all four QUAKE games, this year's champion will need to be a master of a variety of weapons, maps, and play-styles - from QUAKE’s lightening fast action and dominating rocket launcher, to the more strategic gameplay and precision weapons found in the later QUAKE games. 256 contestants will be divided into 4 man groups with each player battling the others in a set of round-robin 1 vs 1 matches. Two phases of round robin play will reduce the competition down to the top 32 players, who will then battle it out in a single-elimination, best of 3 bracket to determine who is truly the QUAKE Master.
