Locki Confirms Second Beta

In an irc question and answer session, SplashDamage Lead Game Designer Paul "Locki" Wedgwood dropped a bomb shell tonight. He just confirmed that a second beta client will be available that will not only include certain bug fixes which can't be solved with a simple patch to the current beta, but will also include a new map!

QuoteAfter the Programmers have completed their testing of new things like the anti-lag code in updates (along with Bots), we'll be releasing a brand new build called Beta 2. This 'Beta 2' will feature a new map.

At the moment we think that Valley will be the best choice, as it features additional vehicles (such as the Anansi Hovercopter, and the MCP objective). To give you a sense of how much performance has improved, I've been playing Valley today against bots on a 7-series NVIDIA in 1600 x 900 with all graphics settings maxed out. It looked amazing and I got really good frame-rates.

We don't have a timeline to announce yet for beta 2

Valley will replace the current map Sewers.

ET:QW Public Beta Updated

Great news for all you Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta testers, as the client update is rolling out as you read this. The update adds bots and fixes several issues. To grab the update, simply start up your beta client and the in-game updater will do the rest.

::
The most significant addition is that the bots are now activated. Server administrators will be able to populate their servers with computer-controlled bots to fill up empty player slots. id Software’s John “Maleficus” Dean has been working on these for quite some time and we’re very excited to be able to roll them out now for our beta testers to see them in action. There’s actually a great interview with John on IGN talking in-depth about the bots, so check that out if you want to learn more about them.

::
One of the most talked about items on the beta forums is that aiming is quite difficult at times due to the way player and latency prediction are handled in this particular revision of the beta. You’re seeing this because our antilag features haven’t been added to the public beta yet, but our latency wonder twins Tristan “FeaRog” Williams and Gordon “digibob” Biggans have been working tirelessly on them in recent weeks and several improvements are forthcoming there. The first is going into this update and you should find it a bit easier to hit targets now. We continue to toil away on antilag and we’ll have a bit more information on what’s going on here in a future blog update.

::
We’ve got two pretty significant server browser fixes in this update, courtesy of our resident user interface commando Jared “jRAD” Hefty. The first fixes the pesky “Server is full.” bug that sometimes occurs when multiple server instances are run on the same box. Essentially, the information sent back from the server would sometimes get confused about which instance was being queried and send the wrong information back to the browser.

The second fix concerns our all-seeing ETQW master server, which happily dropped full servers off the list sent back to the in-game browser. These servers would reappear once they were no longer full, but only if the New List button was being pressed. With this fix, they won’t disappear in the first place, so you will always have the full server roster available for client-side filtering.

::
We’ve plugged a number of memory leaks in the server code, much to the delight of our GSP partners. You should see improved server performance now and we will continue to optimize the ETQW server code in order to make this thing as stable and efficient as possible.

Tonight at 21:00 CET you can front your questions to the developers in #etqwbeta

Quakecon Games Announced

image: Quakecon_logoWith little over a month till the tournament, Quakecon have announced that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Quake will be the games for this summers event.

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars; and the first ever “Quad Damage” tournament spanning all four QUAKE games. The tournaments will take place during the 12th annual QuakeCon which is being held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from August 2-5. More than 6,000 gamers from around the world are expected to attend the four-day event. The total QuakeCon Championship Tournament purse will be $100,000, courtesy of title sponsor NVIDIA

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars makes its tournament debut at QuakeCon 2007. 32 teams will compete in the incredible battles between Earth’s Global Defense Force (GDF) and the invading alien Strogg. Each 6-person team will battle it out in a double-elimination bracket-style tournament, with each team having the opportunity to both attack and defend. With a focus on objective and class-based gameplay, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars will test each team’s ability to combine skill, strategy, and teamwork in tournament play like never before.

QUAKE Quad-Damage Tournament

This year brings a new twist to QuakeCon's classic 1 vs. 1 competition with the inaugural Quad Damage Tournament. Spanning all four QUAKE games, this year's champion will need to be a master of a variety of weapons, maps, and play-styles - from QUAKE’s lightening fast action and dominating rocket launcher, to the more strategic gameplay and precision weapons found in the later QUAKE games. 256 contestants will be divided into 4 man groups with each player battling the others in a set of round-robin 1 vs 1 matches. Two phases of round robin play will reduce the competition down to the top 32 players, who will then battle it out in a single-elimination, best of 3 bracket to determine who is truly the QUAKE Master.

ET:QW Keys To Be Won

Crossfire HQ here, and we've good news. As you well know we're always looking out for our userbase, and having seen that 65% of Crossfire users still don't have an ET:QW beta key we had to act. Crossfire HQ forumulated a plan, Fusen would skip work and hack into locki's wifi - freeing keys for all. Unfortunatly, we found out at the last minute there was one slight flaw to this near perfect plan, Fusen doesn't have a car. So failing that we asked Splash Damage nicely.

Now most middle-of-the-road, tiny userbase sites threw theirs away without a care. But here at Crossfire we think you're better than that, that we should reward the talent. We've 10 keys available and they'll be distributed as follows:

3x Keys for the best Crossfire & ET:QW related wallpaper (1280x768 or 1280x1024)
3x Keys for the best Youtube plea as to why you deserve one
3x Keys for the best journal plea as to why you deserve one
1x Key for the person that comes up with the best motto for Crossfire

Rules

The wallpaper needs to integrate ET:QW and Crossfire
The motto should represent what our community (site) stands for, what it is, what we do.
Youtube and journal plea's are a free fragging yard. You can use anything at your disposal to get our attention - but a certain quality has to be guaranteed.
Youtube submissions should join the Crossfirenu group and then post their entry below
Journals should be labeled [ET:QW] <rest of title>
Motto entries should be posted below
The contest closes Saturday 23rd June, 18:00 CET
The Crossfire Crew will decide the winners

Each winner will be awarded one key. #x signifies the number of winners.

ET:QW 4 Newbies

image: banner

The popular map maker and general ET philanthropist United States of America Ifurita - famous for his creation RTCW4Newbies has been busy at work bringing his site up to date with all you need to know on ET:QW. From individual CVARS to scritping if you are into ETQW it's definately worth checking it out.

A first stop for any newbie should be the config section, taking you back to basics - remember this is the doom engine not quake, so your +forward & +attack are useless here. That can be found in the scripting section.

The next port of call should be to familiarise yourself with Sewer, the only map in the beta. Luckily for us Ifurita has already jotted down a 5 point plan to victory.

Amongst other things you'll also find a detailed run down of the xp upgrades, which should look familiar to the hardened 40 man xp save veteran. http://4newbies.planetwolfenstein.gamespy.com/ETQW/experience.php

And finally the Newbies 12 Commandments, you should all learn how to be a good newbie.

Ps. There will be approximately 30,000 keys released for non-subscribers, so if you don't have a FilePlanet subscription, you can still sign up for a free account and chance your luck. It's expected that the free keys will be released this Saturday.

CB Chiefs of C&A Speak Out

It seems there have been a number of issues brought up surrounding the recent case of keran and shy of Germany Pro5 receiving bans for cheating on a public server. The following news item will hopefully explain further details of this case to those of you who have only heard a certain point of view regarding it.

Firstly we shall take the player bans themselves. Each player was given a 6 month ban in accordance with the ClanBase cheating and abuse policy. During this time they will be unable to participate in any ClanBase competitions as punishment for cheating. We at ClanBase think the punishment should fit the crime. There is absolutely no evidence of keran or shy having cheated during any ClanBase matches therefore there is no reason to change the result of any match in which they've played. ClanBase will only take action when we have solid proof that an offence has been committed, not just someone's opinion that because a player has been caught cheating in the past that automatically means they must be cheating every subsequent time they load a game.

Giving out 6 month bans for cheating outside of ClanBase is not what we would consider lenient. Whatever the context or excuses given in this case (or others) everyone is, and should be, treated the same way. The bottom line is, keran was not caught cheating in a CB match, similarly 1000s of other players are also not caught cheating in CB matches. Their results are never changed, so why should we do it now for keran?

The other bans brought up in comparison were all dealt with in accordance to the ClanBase cheating and abuse policy at that time. In the past we have removed all of the player's results as it was deemed they cheated in all matches they had played. That rule has now changed.

You all know that our policy has gone under a few changes since then. To bring up old bans as an example is just futile, unless they were handled with the same policy. We try to keep our policy updated and it is always evolving to take into consideration unique situations and events.

Secondly we had a point brought up that ClanBase took too long to ban the player in question. Punkbuster logged keran's catch on the 7th of March and the ban was proposed to the Cheating and Abuse Chiefs on the 16th of May. Due to some of our personnel taking time off (yes, volunteers can take holidays too!) it took longer to process the ban than we would have liked, but given the amount of work our C&A team have to get through it certainly wasn't an obscene amount of time. During this period we cannot disallow the player from playing in our competitions purely because people are innocent until proven guilty, and players are only guilty when their bans have been properly processed and verified by our C&A team.

Thirdly we have the interesting situation brought up by the fact keran's ban was processed whilst he was playing in a ClanBase match, it's fair to say that common sense should prevail here. We should not punish the player for playing when there was no way he could have known a ban for him had been processed, by the same token his clan should also not be punished for playing in the same match as him. It is ridiculous to suggest that we should take an unnecessary hard line and punish the player and clan in this case since there was no opportunity for them to take action by dropping the player for the match. We will, however, be looking at the wording of the policy to take into account the small possibility of a situation like this occurring again. As with real life law there is always the likelihood that we will update our rules based on cases that arise.

Finally we'd like to thank all the people who continue to put their hard work and effort into the ClanBase ET community. It is easy to sit on a pedestal and criticise others who are trying to do their best, it's quite another to actually get off your bum and be one of those selfless people who are willing to give up their own spare time for the benefit of others. There may have been some inconsistencies in the past, we're only human after all, but we will now work hard to eradicate these so that everyone gets the same fair treatment. We only hope that others will mirror this attitude and perhaps realise actions do in fact speak a lot louder than words.

CPC 2 Starts Tonight

image: CPC2BAN
Tonight the most important event of 2007 kicks off, the now inaugural Crossfire PrizeFight Challenge. Due to massive time constraints in Enschede seed 1 and seed 4 of each group will play each other online.

The first match sees minions Denmark clan ALIS take on CPC #1 champions United Kingdom Team Dignitas. ALIS were drafted in as a last minute replcement to suXus. Though they profess they're simply attending for fun, and they've little aspirations of beating Dignitas should they sneak a map tonight that'll set them up perfectly for this weekend - Group B is undoutably the easiest group of the four.

But inevitably the most important factor today sees Night's replacement play his first official for Dignitas. Yes they've yet to announce it, and yes it's the worst kept secret in ET - Ireland sol Mr X plays tonight.
